Don’t believe everything you read in email!
I’ve gotten not one, but three copies of a story about how out-dated pancake or cake mixes can be toxic and have killed. Most of the emails reference an article in Snopes.com, the reported advocate of truth online. Now, I believe Snopes to be a reputable organization, but I’ve found that most people who reference them don’t read beyond the first paragraph. If you take the time to read the entire article, YES – flour mixes kept in unsanitary conditions and exposed to air and mold CAN cause illness (in extreme circumstances, even death), especially for those with allergies or asthma. That being said, it is NOT the age of the product that matters (though it might not be as great as when originally purchased), but most importantly, the method in which it is stored. So be conscientious in how well your next purchase is sealed, and exercise due diligence in how you care for the product. I don’t like being scared, and don’t want to do the same to you – so again, just be careful of what the condition is when you get it, and how you take care of products that have been opened. And don’t buy into the fear factor!
